Dr Beckmann vs. PrimeDrum: Which Washing Machine Cleaner Is Actually Worth It?

Dr Beckmann vs. PrimeDrum: Which Washing Machine Cleaner Is Actually Worth It?

If musty towels, re-washed loads, a slimy rubber seal, or that damp-dog smell on clean washing has become your new normal, the problem is probably inside your machine.

It’s called biofilm: the build-up that forms inside your washing machine, behind the drum, in the seal, the pipes and the sump. That is why washing machine cleaners have become so popular. The appeal is simple: sort your machine out without scrubbing, complicated routines, or an engineer callout.

Two of the most talked about options are PrimeDrum and Dr Beckmann. Both go into an empty hot wash and are designed to clean the machine and stop the smell. But they work in very different ways.

Our editors compared the ingredients, the drain water, ease of use, and everyday experience of both cleaners. Here’s what stood out.

Key Similarities

  • Both aim to clean the inside of the machine to stop odour, cut build-up, and keep washing clean.
  • Both are no-scrub and vinegar-free.
  • Both are sold across the UK and cost far less than an engineer callout.
  • Both target the machine itself as a key part of musty towels, re-washed loads, and clothes that smell off.

PrimeDrum Overview

PrimeDrum¹ is a tri-enzyme washing machine tablet made by PrimeDrum, a small London-based company. The enzymes behind it go back to NASA, where they were developed to break down biological waste in sealed water systems, and it is now used in more than 10,000 UK pet homes, including professional groomers.

PrimeDrum breaks the build-up down with enzymes, from the inside, instead of rinsing over it. That difference matters. PrimeDrum is not just a different tablet from Dr Beckmann. It uses an enzyme-based approach to the build-up, while Dr Beckmann runs on oxygen bleach.

Enzymes go after what the build-up is actually made of. Protease breaks down the keratin in pet hair, lipase strips the grease from dander and skin oils, and alpha-amylase dissolves the film that traps it all against the drum. That helps make PrimeDrum a more consistent, longer-lasting option for regular use.

The build-up it targets covers pet hair, dander, skin oils, detergent film and fabric softener residue. In our side-by-side test, two identical machines from the same pet home, the PrimeDrum machine stayed odour free for two months and counting.

PrimeDrum has a strong safety profile. It is safe for every kind of washing machine, including HE models, and it is septic-safe. The most common thing people notice is dark brown water on the first cycle, which is the build-up finally leaving the machine.

PrimeDrum is also easy to use on a regular basis. You simply drop one tablet into the empty drum, run a hot cycle, and get on with your day. It does not need measuring, scrubbing or vinegar. PrimeDrum works out at under a pound a tablet on the three pack, includes free delivery, and comes with a 60-day money-back guarantee.

Dr Beckmann vs PrimeDrum

Dr Beckmann Overview

Dr Beckmann Service-It Deep Clean is an oxygen bleach powder focused on hygiene and odour. It has built a sizeable following on UK supermarket shelves and is often positioned as a lower-cost entry point. Our side-by-side used this powder. The brand also sells a liquid and freshener tabs, and none of the product pages we checked name enzymes.

But compared with PrimeDrum, Dr Beckmann comes with more variables to consider. Because oxygen bleach has to work on a build-up made mostly of protein and grease, which it was never designed to break down. The result can depend on how much pet hair goes through the machine, how thick the build-up is, the wash temperature, and where the build-up sits in your machine. That may make results feel less consistent than with an enzyme tablet that breaks the build-up down itself.

Dr Beckmann’s own product information² lists “15-30 % oxygen-based bleaching agents” and perfumes, names no enzymes, and tells you to “pour the powder (250 g) directly into the washing drum” for every clean. There is also the oxygen bleach itself, which handles soap scum and minerals, only about 20% of what sits inside the machine, which makes it a less confident choice for pet homes that want the smell gone for good.

Dr Beckmann also appears to list no enzymes on its label, unlike PrimeDrum’s three. That matters because a general “deep clean” claim does not always tell you how one specific cleaner performs against pet hair and grease.

A dose of powder is also poured in for every clean. That adds prep and mess, which can make regular use feel less convenient.

There are also concerns about how long it lasts. In our side-by-side test, the Dr Beckmann machine smelled better for maybe two days, while the PrimeDrum machine has stayed odour free for two months and counting.

Final Thoughts

When comparing ingredients, how it works, drain water, and everyday use, PrimeDrum makes the stronger case.

PrimeDrum is easy to use, lists its enzymes on the label, and uses an enzyme-based approach to the build-up that is very different from Dr Beckmann’s oxygen bleach method. Drop in a tablet, run a hot cycle, skip the scrubbing, and go about your day.

Dr Beckmann may appeal to people looking for a lower-cost cleaner off the supermarket shelf. But the oxygen bleach formula, no enzymes on the label, a dose of powder every clean, and concerns about the smell coming back make it a less confident choice.

For anyone comparing the two, PrimeDrum is the clearer winner.
